Where do you stand on Irish trivia? Here are 10 interesting facts about Cork, the county we will stay in during our retreat.

1.The first documented immigrant on Ellis Island came from Cork, Ireland. Her name was Anne Moore and she came to the US on the SS Nevada.

2.Cork Harbor is the second largest natural harbor in the world. Millions of tons of traffic travels through Cork Harbor every year.

3.The first Ford factory built outside the United States was built in Cork. Henery Ford’s ancestors hailed from Ballinascarty before they immigrated to the United States, so naturally eight decades later, Cork was the natural place to set up their first international factory.

4.In the 18th century, Cork held the worlds largest Butter Market. While this is no longer the cast, Cork’s English Market located in the city center is still world famous.

5.The world’s first yacht Club, The Royal Cork Yacht Club, was founded in Cork in 1720.

6.The first Steamship to cross the Atlantic left from Cobh in 1838. Cobh was also the last port of call for the Titanic before she sank in 1912.

7.Ireland’s coastal waters was declared a whale and dolphin sanctuary in the early 1990’s, becoming the first sanctuary of this kind in Europe. The waters off the coast of Cork are said to be the best whale watching spot in Europe.

8.There have been settlers in Cork since about 700AD and the city charter itself is over 800 years old.

9.John F Kennedy’s Great Grandfather came from West Cork.

10.The 13 arch bridge in the pretty village of Glanworth which was built in the mid-15th century structure, is said to be the narrowest and oldest public bridge in everyday use in Europe.
